So a few months ago, I thought Riley read the word "blue" = "boo" in his Truck book Aunt Talana Banana got him for his birthday last year, but he didn't repeat it so I figured it was a fluke.
Well much to Kelly and my amazement - we learned on our trip to Maryland our baby can in fact read!! It's crazy! I'm going to make a video of it here soon.
We have a magna doodle we bought for our trip to Maryland to distract him with on the plane and in doing that Kelly wrote the word car on the screen, and Riley said 'Caaaarrrr' as if he's from Boston. Then Kelly wrote Shoe and he read that too! We snapped our heads and looked at each other! It was CRAZY! He can read Car, Pig, Bee, Ball, Shoe...that's all I can think of right now. Dog...and he knows the letter some of them start with - he'll say 'P', Pig. Or 'B' Ball, which is how I think his Bear got the name "B".
Anyway, it's pretty amazing to see! Even on our trip, those videos were the only ones he would watch for any length of time too, so he still enjoys them.
With Kelly and my Dad both having dyslexia, I figure it can't hurt to give Riley a head start in that area.
Reading books is still one of his FAVORITE things too. He'll bring me a book, then turn around and plop right down in my lap.

My Baby can Read!!
OMG! I think the videos may be paying off!! Kelly and I swear that Riley is reading certain words...there is really NO other explanation!
There's one book where he opens it to a certain page and reads Daddy, then another page where he reads Milk. Although, it is a sign language book which could explain Milk, but not Daddy - we've never done the sign for Daddy.
Then just random other words, he'll just blurt them out at different times when they are on his show or in a book.
Who knows....only time will tell one way or another!

A Week of Boo-Boos and Take Out Toys!
So our little rumbling stumbling man is earning his stripes with boo-boo after boo-boo! Right now he has a bruise in the middle of his cheek - I have NO idea how he even got that one! And one on his forehead. That one wasn't a very hard boo-boo, but it must have hit perfectly on a vein or something b/c it bruised almost immediately. He also still has a little bruise under his chin from when my Dad & Shelia were here. He's our little bruiser!! I'd say we average a spill at least once every hour-ish all day every day. Kelly's much better at "distracting" him out of his meltdown from a boo-boo than I am! But we've seen our fair share of crocodile tears since the walking began!
For the take out toys....it just goes to show you never know what he's going to be drawn to. It's always the most random things! This week it was a Taco Bell side of rice bowl and lid. He literally carried it around the house holding it over his head, then dropping it and laughing hysterically for over an hour!! Then today it was a to go cup, lid and straw from Firehouse. First he just wanted to mimic me and "drink" from the straw - which meant him biting on it. Once I drank it all, I showed him how to take the straw out and put it back in, so he sat by me on the sofa for again over an hour which is UNHEARD of and played with the cup, lid and straw!! He never sits still for more than the blink of an eye! If that!
He's also learning body parts - mainly nose, ear, etc. He'll point to yours and grab or touch his own.
He's also going crazy with the sign language! It was HILARIOUS today! We were at the grocery store, and when the cashier picked the milk up out of the basket - he did the sign for milk then more! We were cracking up! I need to expand the sign language while he's "in the zone" with it right now! And he's SUCH a flirt! The cashier at the grocery store was like he's working me over talking to me with those eyes and flashing those rosy cheeks at me!
For 2 weeks, we have a new weekend routine (while the weather cooperates - 75 degrees and sunny). We've been meeting my friend Darcy at Lake Grapevine with her dog Rocky to go for a 4.5 mile walk. I think since I've walked with him in the stroller since he was literally 1 week old - he still loves it. It's like his "zen" time to just hang and enjoy the ride. I better enjoy it while I can. I know eventually he'll want to be walking everywhere on his own.
He's still jibber jabbering like crazy too! But now more and more, he actually says words or at least "parts of words". Like today when I said, here's your cheese - he said "eese". At the grocery store, he was looking at the apples, so Kelly said "apple" and he actually repeated it back. The other day he was watching his "Your Baby Can Read" video, and the video said say "No" and he did! It was so funny b/c Kelly and I were standing in the kitchen and we both snapped our heads and looked at each and said at the same time - "Did you hear that?! He said NO!". Of course, I'm cool with him not learning the meaning of that word for a really long time! :)
I've been really surprised he isn't saying more words that we use every day like milk, more, kiss, etc but who am I to speculate how a new little mind forms?! It's like his 1st word besides Mama and Dada being bubbles of all things!!! Which he still says at least every few nights in the bathtub when he wants me to blow bubbles.

Your Baby Can Read!
So anyone that knows me pretty much knows that I'm a marketer's DREAM! Combine that fact with postpartum hormones, a dash of boredom then throw in a perfectly timed infomercial and you have a lethal combination!
Anyway, one day a couple of months ago I was channel surfing and saw Your Baby Can Read! Of course, I had to check it out since I had a new baby! It was so cool. I think the thing that made the biggest impression on me was a video of an 8 month old baby who couldn't talk, but as they would hold up word cards - she would touch her 'nose', start 'kicking', etc! She couldn't even talk, but she was reading the cards and doing something physical associated with the word!
The day care I chose does baby signing as part of their curriculum, so I was already all about this sort of thing before I got sucked into the infomercial!
Anyway, I had to tivo the infomercial so Kelly could see it later and he was all about it too! And it just so happens that his parents had asked a day or so before what they could get for Riley! So you see...it was meant to be! (I'm also good at rationalizing things! )
So about a week later, a box of dvds, books and flash cards arrive! The way I see it - it won't hurt anything to give it a whirl, and it gives Kelly and I 20 minutes morning and night which we usually use to eat breakfast and dinner. The only problem so far is that Kelly and I walk around ALL DAY singing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, Knees and Toes or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in our heads!!! Seriously, it almost freaks me out like subliminal mind control because you CANNOT get it out of your head!!
But Riley LOVES it! As soon as the intro music starts to play, he gets this HUGE grin on his face like he used to get for his letters and immediately looks at the tv! Then he jabbers back and forth with the tv for the entire time! Along with getting excited and almost bouncing out of his bouncy seat during the songs. He LOVES the tigers too! And when I sing the same songs to him as on the video, he gets excited and smiles like it's something familiar he recognizes.
The theory behind the system is to use an interactive and multi-sensory approach to learning. When using the Your Baby Can Read system, children are allowed to see the words at the same time that they hear the words. Then they do something physical associated with the word. Since children learn language faster and easier during infancy than any other time, it takes advantage of this natural window of opportunity to teach the written language as well as spoken language. Sounds simple enough, and it makes sense. It's sort of the same concept as learning another language during this same time.

I'll keep you posted on how things progress. I could read by around the age of 3, and I still LOVE to read so I figure that's a gift that keeps on giving for the rest of Riley's life!
